until 2018, the Old Primary School of Porto Santo, was the only school in this small Island and today makes an integral part of the memory and identity of all generations of inhabitants. It is exemplar in the relationship between the architectural and teaching space, as a place where the encounter with learning is activated. Following the abandonment of the school community from the building, Porto Santo Municipality established a protocol with <a rel=\\\"noopener\\\" href=\\\"https:\/\/www.porta33.com\/index.html\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\">Porta33<\/a> Cultural Association, with the aim of transforming the Old School space into a place of residences and artistic activities, in proximity to the local community.<\/p>\\n<p class=\\\"_Default\\\">The School was designed in the late 1950s by the architect Ra\\u00fal Chor\\u00e3o Ramalho, and is a remarkable example of modernity and typological innovation in Portuguese architecture.<\/p>\\n<\/div>\\n<\/div>\",\"align\":\"top\",\"row\":3,\"col\":1,\"colspan\":4,\"offsetx\":0,\"offsety\":0,\"spaceabove\":0,\"spacebelow\":0,\"yvel\":1,\"push\":1,\"relid\":10,\"absolute_position\":false,\"textAnimation\":{\"enableTextAnimation\":false}},{\"type\":\"text\",\"cont\":\"<div data-collapsed=\\\"false\\\">\\n<div data-type=\\\"text\\\" data-yvel=\\\"1\\\">\\n<p class=\\\"_Default\\\"><span style=\\\"letter-spacing: 0em; text-indent: 0em;\\\">The project\\u2019s kick-start was facilitated by the first seminar <a rel=\\\"noopener\\\" href=\\\"https:\/\/www.porta33.com\/porta33_porto_santo\/eventos\/content_eventos\/redesenhar_escola\/redesenhar_escola_vila_1m_entrada.html\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\">Redesenhar a Antiga Escola da Vila do Porto Santo <span>\\u2014 <\/span>encontros com o territ\\u00f3rio e a sua comunidade atrav\\u00e9s da Arte<\/a> [Redesigning the Old School of Porto Santo Village <span>\\u2014 <\/span>meetings with the territory and its community through Art], in November 2019, where the first bonds with the community were established and the work axes were outlined.<\/span><\/p>\\n<\/div>\\n<p class=\\\"_Default\\\">There were three axes that were fundamental and orienting for the development of the project in Porto Santo School: the Architecture Axis, the Thought Axis and the Visual Arts Axis. In March 2020, the second part of the Seminar took place, time when I integrated the team in the<br \/>implementation of the Architecture Axis, the programme and the project on was defined in two work fronts:<\/p>\\n<p><span>\\u2014<\/span> on one hand the conducting the landscape, territory and architectural survey, the architectural heritage protection procedure of the school building through the <a rel=\\\"noopener\\\" href=\\\"https:\/\/cultura.madeira.gov.pt\/not%C3%ADcias1\/636-classifica%C3%A7%C3%A3o-da-escola-prim%C3%A1ria-do-porto-santo.html\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\">Classification of Built Heritage,<\/a> and the building intervention to be performed;<\/p>\\n<p><span>\\u2014 <\/span>on the other hand a close collaboration with Porta33 in the structuring of the artistic and social programming of the project, development of local partnerships and submission of the application to the European Fund EEAGrants, Connecting Dots \\u2013 Artistic Mobility and Audience Development, submitted in October 2020.<\/p>\\n<p>\\u00a0<\/p>\\n<p>From January 2021, a new bond was established, including the collaboration of <a rel=\\\"noopener\\\" href=\\\"https:\/\/diogoamaro.com\/\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\">Diogo Amaro<\/a> in the Porto Santo School operation, for co-monitoring the adaptation and maintenance of the construction works carried out in the building, which had the support of the Regional Government of Madeira, as well as for the coconception of the inaugural research carried out, with the aim was to restore the original design wherever possible, namely by identifying and restoring the original colours and removing additions, in an attempt to restore the building\\u2019s original clarity.<\/p>\\n<p>The limited budget required a rigorous prioritisation exercise, assuming an intervention that was sometimes anonymous and invisible, but conscious and necessary. until 2018, the Old Primary School of Porto Santo, was the only school in this small Island and today makes an integral part of the memory and identity of all generations of inhabitants. It is exemplar in the relationship between the architectural and teaching space, as a place where the encounter with learning is activated. Following the abandonment of the school community from the building, Porto Santo Municipality established a protocol with <a rel=\\\"noopener\\\" href=\\\"https:\/\/www.porta33.com\/index.html\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\">Porta33<\/a> Cultural Association, with the aim of transforming the Old School space into a place of residences and artistic activities, in proximity to the local community.<\/p>\\n<p class=\\\"_Default\\\">The School was designed in the late 1950s by the architect Ra\\u00fal Chor\\u00e3o Ramalho, and is a remarkable example of modernity and typological innovation in Portuguese integration in the team was defined in two work fronts:<\/p>\\n<p><span>\\u2014<\/span> on one hand the conducting the landscape, territory and architectural survey, the architectural heritage protection procedure of the school building through the <a rel=\\\"noopener\\\" href=\\\"https:\/\/cultura.madeira.gov.pt\/not%C3%ADcias1\/636-classifica%C3%A7%C3%A3o-da-escola-prim%C3%A1ria-do-porto-santo.html\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\">Classification of Built Heritage,<\/a> and the building intervention to be performed;<\/p>\\n<p><span>\\u2014 <\/span>on the other hand a close collaboration with Porta33 in the structuring of the artistic and social programming of the project, development of local partnerships and submission of the application to the European Fund EEAGrants, Connecting Dots \\u2013 Artistic Mobility and Audience Development, submitted in October 2020.<\/p>\\n<p>\\u00a0<\/p>\\n<p>From January 2021, a new bond was established, including the collaboration of <a rel=\\\"noopener\\\" href=\\\"https:\/\/diogoamaro.com\/\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\">Diogo Amaro<\/a> in the Porto Santo School operation, for co-monitoring the adaptation and maintenance of the construction works carried out in the building, which had the support of the Regional Government of Madeira, as well as for the coconception of the inaugural research carried out, with the aim was to restore the original design wherever possible, namely by identifying and restoring the original colours and removing additions, in an attempt to restore the building\\u2019s original clarity.<\/p>\\n<p>The limited budget required a rigorous prioritisation exercise, assuming an intervention that was sometimes anonymous and invisible, but conscious and necessary.
